Stewart W. Sommerville

Stewart W. Sommerville, 68, of Claverack, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He was born on September 19, 1958, in Poughkeepsie, to Wade and Nettie (Hults) Sommerville.

Stewart spent 23 years as an English teacher at the Maple Brook School in Amenia, where he touched countless lives with his commitment, patience, and dedication to learning. His leadership and enthusiasm were integral to the organization and greatly appreciated by all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Stew was a longtime volunteer and life member at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome where he became the Operations Manager for several years.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Stewart was known for his passion for Model T's and enjoyed building model cars—a hobby that reflected his attention to detail and creative spirit. Music was another source of joy; Stewart was an avid musician, he played the drums,guitar and later learned to play the flute. Stew was a lifelong Beatles fan, loved Jethro Tull and classical Music.

Stewart's faith was a cornerstone of his character. A devout Catholic, he found strength and comfort within his religious community.

He is survived by his wife Maxine, his sister Susan (Terry) Sangillo, his brothers Kenneth (Sharon) Sommerville and Daniel (Erin) Sommerville, his nieces Amanda Schweiger, Christina Goolsby and Jamie Sommerville, his nephews Brad Hawks and Corey Sangillo, as well as his father Wade, and his wife Janet Sommerville, and mother Nettie Sommerville and 4 Great nephew and nieces. Stewart leaves behind a legacy marked by service, kindness, and steadfast devotion to those he loved and the communities he served.

Stewart W. Sommerville will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

A Mass of Christians Burial will be Celebrated on August 13, 2026 at 11:00am from St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook. Stew’s friend Father Tom Lutz will officiate. Inurnment will take place privately at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Gardiner, New York.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Peck & Peck Funeral Homes, Pine Plains.
