Reginald B. Madison 85 of Hudson,, an accomplished artist and devoted community advocate, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, New York, under the compassionate care of Hospice. Born on January 19, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, Reggie was a man whose life and work were deeply influenced by the vibrant experimental jazz musicians and visual artists of Chicago’s South Side.
From his early years, Reggie demonstrated a profound connection to art, a passion that would carry him across continents and decades. By 1970, he had embarked on a path of artistic exploration, studying independently in the great cultural centers of Paris, Venice, and Copenhagen. His move to Western Massachusetts marked a new chapter in his life where he continued to create and inspire through his painting and sculpture. His work was a testament not only to his skill but also to his enduring commitment to pushing boundaries and expressing the complexities of the human experience.
Reginald’s dedication extended beyond his art. He had a deep love for jazz music and the arts in general, which fueled his lifelong mission to empower the Black community. His energy and vision resonated through his efforts to uplift others, a reflection of his kind and open-minded spirit. Those who knew him invariably speak of a man who was loving, generous, and ever a steadfast friend—a quality that defined his relationships and personal interactions.
His pride in his family and his partner shaped his life as much as his artistic achievements. For 43 years, he shared a profound partnership with Marlene Marshall, a bond rooted in mutual support and respect. Together, they nurtured a life that brought him immense joy and pride.
He is survived by his children Rodney Madison, Rene’ Madison-Lee, Lori Storey, Sofi Madison, and Niles Madison; Grandchildren Regina, Reggie, Niko, and Ollie; Great-grandchildren Isis, Irie, and India; and Great-great-grandchild Tahj.
Reggie was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Madison and Mercedes (Barksdale) Madison, and his sister, Yvonne Johnson. Their memory lived in his heart and in the foundations they laid for a man who would touch so many lives.
Reginald B. Madison’s life was rich with accomplishment and meaning. He leaves behind an enduring impact on the worlds of painting and sculpture, a vibrant legacy within his community, and the lasting love of a large, devoted family. His spirit, defined by kindness and openness, will remain a light for all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Hudson Hall had been honored to plan a Caravan, a solo exhibition of Reggie’s work on view July 18 – October 11, 2026 celebrating his remarkable artistic vision.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Peck & Peck Funeral Homes, Copake, New York.
