Maria Kuefner, 99, passed away on November 1, 2026, at Regional Hospice in Danbury, Connecticut. She was born on April 12, 1927, in Boz, Romania, and lived a long life marked by devotion to family, resilience, and the simple joys that brought people together.
Maria’s life journey carried both hardship and deep love. As a young teenager, she was taken from her family, along with her classmates, to a work camp in Russia during World War II. It was there that she met her husband, Peter Kuefner. Their meeting became the beginning of a shared life and family that would remain at the heart of Maria’s world. With the help of the Lutheran Refugee services, the two of them with their son immigrated to the United States in February of 1959. They began their life here in Mt. Vernon, before relocating to Carmel and eventually Stanfordville. She alongside her son Wolfgang owned and operated Hunns Lake House Community Residence in Stanfordville.
She found happiness in everyday comforts and in the company of those she loved most. Maria loved crocheting, cooking, eating, bowling, gardening, spending time with her family, and watching Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune. Above all, she loved her family, and that love shaped the warmth she brought to those around her. She also loved traveling with family and shared many fond trips to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Romania and Hungary. These experiences reflected her connection to places and memories across the years.
Maria is survived by her daughter, Anita Mosso, and her son in law Stephen. She is also survived by her grandsons, Peter and Robert Mosso, who were an important part of her life and brought her great joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Kuefner; her son, Wolfgang Kuefner and her six brothers.
