Kenneth Van Alphen

November 10, 1946 — May 8, 2026

Copake, NY

Kenneth “Butch” VanAlphen Sr. Born November 10th 1942 known lovingly to nearly everyone as Butch, and later simply as “Poppie,” lived a life defined by hard work, ingenuity, kindness, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Somewhere along the journey of fatherhood and grandparenthood, Butch became Poppie—a name that not only his grandchildren used, but one that stayed with everyone who knew and loved him. To all who met him, he was simply Poppie

Poppie began his lifelong journey of labor and craftsmanship working on the Roberts dairy farm, where he developed the strong work ethic and practical skills that would shape the rest of his life. He later went on to manage Jenkins Farm for nearly 30 years, dedicating himself to farming while mastering welding, mechanics, and the art of fixing just about anything on his own. If you gave Poppie an idea, he found a way to make it happen.

In 1987, after retiring from farming, Poppie brought his mechanical expertise to Funk & Gallups, where he worked as a mechanic and continued doing what he did best—solving problems, building, repairing, and helping others. His talents, determination, and remarkable ability to create or fix nearly anything stayed with him until the very end.

Poppie was known not only for his incredible skill and resourcefulness, but also for his wisdom, kindness, and generosity. He was always ready to lend a helping hand before anyone even had to ask. He shared invaluable life lessons with everyone fortunate enough to know him, leaving lasting impressions on family, friends, and his community.

Kenneth was predeceased by his parents, Hazel and John VanAlphen; his beloved daughter, Sunday; his brothers, Wally VanAlphen and Henry “Tut” Creator; and his sister, Rosie Hotaling.

He is survived by his beloved children: daughter Kendle Pulver (Chester), sons Kenneth VanAlphen Jr. (Cari), and Randy VanAlphen (Pamela); his siblings Robert VanAlphen and John VanAlphen Jr.; his cherished grandchildren Kenneth III, Shaun, Josh, Shad, Alyssa, Mikayla, Zachary, and Brianna; along with 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

Poppie's legacy of strength, wisdom, craftsmanship, and unconditional kindness will live on through the many generations he helped shape. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always honored.
