J. Mark Schmearer, age 74, passed away at his home in Copake, NY, on February 1, 2026. He was born in Seattle, Washington to the late Abraham and Marcella (Crane) Schmearer but spent most of his early life in Montana. Growing up in Montana instilled in him a great love of the outdoors, especially for the mountains; he visited as many National Parks as he could, and loved making pastel paintings of the natural world. Mark studied journalism in college, and had a passion for writing and literature. As an avid reader, he enjoyed spending time at the Roe Jan Library. He was always looking to learn more about different subjects, including philosophy and meteorology. He was a Revolutionary War buff who loved visiting historical sites across New England. After retirement, he enjoyed riding his recumbent bike on the rail trail and taking cross-country trips with Terrie Ann to explore the natural beauty of the USA's landscapes. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Terrie Ann Schmearer; his daughters, Abby Schmearer (Cory Trombley) and Emily Thibodeaux; and his sisters, Glady (John) McKenney, Mary (Terry) Lewis, and Lisa Bresnahan.
Interment will take place in Dodson, Montana privately for family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Peck & Peck Funeral Homes.
