Doreen S. Kosnick

August 7, 1930 — December 18, 2025

Greenport, NY

Doreen S. Kosnick, 95, of Greenport, passed away on Thursday, December 18th, 2025. Doreen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose life was defined by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to others.

Family was always at the center of Doreen’s world. Her home was a place where everyone was welcome, where no one ever left hungry, and where laughter, conversation, and care filled every room. She had a rare gift for seeing the good in everyone and made each person feel valued and loved.

Doreen was a graduate of the Red Hook School District in 1949. She worked for a short-time at an insurance company in Albany, NY, but ultimately ended up taking on the role of homemaker. However, anyone who knew Doreen knew she was much more than someone who ‘just’ stayed home doing laundry, sweeping floors, or washing dishes.

Doreen was incredibly active in various community groups over the years. She was a founding member of the Greenport Senior Citizen’s, where she enjoyed friendship, community, and had the opportunity to travel across the country. She was also a part of the Hudson Fortnightly group, and for many years, an active volunteer at the Hudson Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, where she served warm meals to those in need. She was also presented with an honorary award in 2006 for her volunteer work with the Hudson Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen.

Most notably, however, Doreen has been a lifelong and devoted member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Hudson, NY. She was an active member of the Women’s Group, participating in many cookie walks, bake sales, and coffee hours. Doreen also served many years on the Board of Trustees. She found great pride in serving her church community. Her faith guided her life and shaped her deep commitment to helping others in quiet, yet meaningful ways.

Doreen had many simple joys. She loved baking, especially sweets, and sharing her treats with family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed taking pictures with her camera capturing everyday moments and we are positive she was CVS Greenport’s most valuable customer for film development. Doreen was also ‘famous’ on the other side of the camera, often being featured in the Independent and Register Star for her incredible holiday lawn and house decorations. While she loved every holiday, her favorite was Halloween; mostly because her house was where everyone gathered to trick-or-treat.

Whether through a warm meal, a listening ear, or a kind word, Doreen always put others before herself. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and in the family who will forever carry her love forward. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Doreen is survived by her identical twin sister Diane, her sister-in-law Joan Snyder, her three children Debbie (Doug) Disko, Darlene (Andrew) Keute, and Paul Kosnick. She was the world’s best grandma to her four grandchildren Dara (Steve) McCagg, Andrew (Amy) Keute, Jessica (James) McNamee, and Christina Elkins. Doreen was also blessed with five great-grandchildren who were the lights of her life - Morgan, Colton, Abigail, Jaxon, and Chloe. She also adored her forever daughter-in-law, Loretta Kosnick.

The family also wishes to thank and acknowledge Donna, one of Doreen’s primary caretakers, for all she did for Doreen, including frequently bringing her one of her favorite treats - warm apple pies from McDonald’s.

Doreen was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years John (Jack) Kosnick, her brother Donald Snyder, as well as her parents Harold and Ethel Snyder (Fraleigh).
