Taghkanic, NY - World War ll veteran Adolf 'Red' Meier, 88, passed away Saturday, February 25, at home surrounded by family. Born April 2, 1923 in Peekskill, NY he was the son of Adolf W. Meier, Sr. and Margaret M. (Bissert) Meier.
On May 11, 1947 he married his beloved, June Adelaide Gilbert. Mrs. Meier predeceased him on January 5, 2000. Mr. Meier is survived by his daughters: Martha Meier with whom he resided in Taghkanic , and Marjorie Splain, and her husband Terry of Holly Springs, NC; three grandchildren: Shonna Splain of Charlotte, NC, Brennan Splain of Asheville, NC, , and Logan Meier of Boulder, CO; his siblings who will cherish his memory: Stephen Meier, Katherine LeFevre, Elizabeth Franklin, William Meier, Madeline Meier and Charles Meier; as well as many nieces and nephews. He considered close family friend Kathy Lauerman, of Denver, Colorado, part of his extended family.
Corporal Meier entered the US Marine Corps on December 15, 1942 and served until January 11, 1946 with the 5th Marine Division, L Battery, 4th Battalion, 13th Marine Regiment. On February 19, 1945 he was among the first to land on Iwo Jima and participated in action there until March 16, 1945, with further service in the Asiatic Pacific area until his Honorable Discharge in 1946. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the Marine Corp Good Conduct Ribbon, the WW II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
Red lived with his family in Hyde Park, NY. for 36 years. As the owner and operator of Redmere Builders, Inc., he built homes throughout Westchester County, N.Y. Red moved to Taghkanic with his daughter 11 years ago. Red was a master woodworker, and an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman and reader. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, lively conversations and time with his family.
