Ruth B. Yrus 91, passed away comfortably March 11, 2024 at Sharon Health Care Center
Ruth was born to Henry and Myrtle Birdsall on May 30, 1932 in Norwalk, Connecticut. She attended Katonah High School where she played field hockey, basketball, and enjoyed playing the clarinet. On July 25, 1953, she married her loving husband, John Yrus.
In 1959, they moved to Pine Plains where they built their house and have been there since. A hard worker, Ruth started out working at Cavalier Gage Electronics in Salt Point and cleaned houses. From there, she was a bookkeeper for Deuel's Hardware, then decided to drive buses for Pine Plains Central School District. Ruth was a loving mother, avid reader, and could knit anything. She enjoyed playing cards and listening to Daniel O'Donnel on Saturday nights. She also loved to cook, make cakes for all occasions, and was known for her fabulous cake decorating abilities. A devoted Catholic, she attended weekly Mass at St. Anthony's R.C. Church.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 68 years, John Yrus; her daughters Judy (Richard) Schneider and Susan (Davis) Simmons, five loving grandchildren, Richard, Robert, and William Schneider, Travis Simmons, and Kirby O'Berry, in addition to twelve great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank their friends and wonderful neighbors who assisted with Ruth's care and helped out over the last several years. Also, thank you to the wonderful hospice folks and the staff at Sharon Health Care.
A memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 10:00am from St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church 67 Poplar Avenue, Pine Plains, New York, Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Ruth's memory be made to St. Anthony's Church, Pine Plains.
