Terrance McLaughlin Obituary

Terrence “Terry” McLaughlin, devoted family man and dear friend to many, died suddenly on the morning of August 21, 2019, at the age of 68, while visiting family upstate in Taghkanic, NY.  The cause was a heart attack.

He was born to Winifred Kane and William James McLaughlin in Brooklyn, NY on October 26, 1950.  He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Terry started working at HBO Studios as a studio engineer in 1973 and built many loving friendships during his time there.  His infectious kindness and top-notch sound mixing skills were an inspiration to many.  He retired from HBO in 2014 after 40 wonderful years.

On August 25, 1979, he married Theresa Campochiaro.  He quickly became a part of her tight-knit Italian family.  They lived together for many years in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn with Theresa’s mother, Rose Campochiaro.  Theresa and Terry spent 25 loving years together.  Theresa’s tragic death from cancer in 2005 changed the course of Terry’s life.

Terry will be remembered as a most gentle giant – a friend to everyone with a gregarious, kind and welcoming spirit.  He was a lover of a life, always finding the good in people.  He loved to dance and cook.  He loved computers and gadgets.  And most of all, he loved to connect with people.  He always picked up the phone and called his loved ones to catch up.

Terry was happy to be in a close, loving relationship with Sonia Lametz.   Both widows, they shared lots of laughs and a caring companionship for many years.

It was a blessing that he spent the last week of his life with Theresa’s family, who loved him as their own, including his Aunt Olympia (Lynn) Coppola, his Uncle Asa (Ace) Nostrand, and his loving cousins - Jeanette Micelotta, Paul and Renée Nostrand, Stephen and Martha Desiderio, Dianne Mallet, MaryAnn Ambrosio, Rebecca and Joe Scialabba, Suzanne and John Cozelino, Dolores and Bob Motz, Kara Desiderio and Kristina Wertz and their children Olympia and Emilio Wertz.

He is survived by the aforementioned as well as many other loving cousins from Theresa’s family, his girlfriend Sonia, his Aunt Kate Vivo and her family, niece Siobhan Maher and nephew Brendan Maher, and his grand nieces and nephews.  He also leaves behind numerous lifelong friends whom he treasured deeply.  He was predeceased by his mother Winifred, his father William, his sisters Denise Maher and Kathleen McLaughlin, his brother Joseph McLaughlin and his wife Theresa.

There will be a memorial mass held on Saturday, September 14th at 11:30am at St. Ephrem Church in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. His remains will be laid to rest along side Theresa’s in St. Johns, Florida.  In memory of Terry, donations can made be made to the Taghkanic Fire Company in gratitude of their service, the American Heart Association or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
